REDE
JUSTIÇA
CRIMINAL
Created in 2010, the Rede Justiça Criminal (in English, Criminal Justice Network) is the result of the union from nine organizations that work to revert the mass imprisonment logic. In our actions, we contribute to the qualification of the public debate and focus on decision making politics to insure the existence of a criminal justice system that does not violate the rights and guarantees of Brazilian citizens.
AXIS OF ACTION
There are five different action strategies:
COMBAT TO THE MASS PRISON AND PROMOTION OF FREED POLICIES
Overcrowding, lack of adequate food, difficult access to justice, subjection to torture and other inhuman and cruel treatments are the manifestation of a State politic that favors prison as the main solution when it comes to conflict and affects, above all, the black population. In the face of this context, we fight for the decarceration and against the current criminal justice system, which persists in violating human rights.
Our initiatives on this topic:
PUBLIC SECURITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS
The fight against violence has only been carried out through a repressive approach, which is incapable of reducing crime rates. This kind of response only deepens structural inequalities and feeds back into a racist, selective, and punitive criminal justice system. We defend a public security model that prioritizes the most vulnerable groups and that involves the development of intersectoral public policies of race, class, gender and that ensure basic rights.
Our initiatives on this topic:
CONFRONTING RACISM
The criminal punitivism incarcerates, as a priority, young black men and women, poor, with a low level of education and residents of the suburbs. The criminal justice system and public security policies reinforce racist, classist, and exclusionary practices that define social relations in Brazil and feed mass incarceration and the genocide of the black population.
Our initiatives on this topic:
PREVENTION AND COMBAT TO TORTURE
Brazil is a signatory to international laws and treaties that seek to combat and prevent cases of torture, a cruel and degrading act that injures human dignity, but which still occurs frequently in the country. Its combat and prevention require the commitment of governments, the fostering of a culture averse to violence and punishment, and unrestricted support for victims.
Our initiatives on this topic:
DEMOCRACY AND RIGHTS
The defense and qualification of democracy are essential for the promotion of fundamental rights and guarantees. Its improvement and the rejection of attacks aimed at weakening it are essential to the fight against racial, economic, and gender inequalities and to the construction of a society based on respect for human rights.

OUR
TRAJECTORY
We advocate a systemic change in Brazilian criminal justice. During the last few years, we have been able to collectively propose initiatives, stop setbacks, and contribute to fundamental discussions about what kind of justice we want.
